1966 Shelby History

The 66 Shelby Mustang GT350 had a production of 2'380 Vehicles. Of the 2'380 Carroll Shelby claimed he ordered 6 of them in Convertible ( only 4 verified ). 1000 of the Shelby Mustangs in 1966 were ordered by The Hertz Car Rental Company. The colors in 1966 were varied and not just the classic White as in 1965. Shelby introduced Blue, Red, Green and Black in conjunction with the classic white.

The 66 Shelby Mustang came in Automatic as well as a 4 speed manual transmission. The 66 Had larger brakes, Functional Air Scopps were on the hood just as in 65 but they went back to a metal hood instead of the Fiberglass Hood used in 1965. The rear seat was now standard in fold down style, not fixed in case you didnt want to use it.

350 Shelby Mustangs were made Convertibles, paint job was all colors as the regular non-convertibles. Outside of the 11 Supercharged Shelby Mustangs in 1966 the convertibles were the rarest and most sought after convertible mustang.

High Country Specials were another limited release in 1966, 35 of the 333 made were convertibles. Outside of the special colors of paint they featured special emblems. only Sold in Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.

Also in 1966 the first 252 GT350's were cars carried over from the previous year. The same standard setup as the rest of the 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350s. The way that they were told apart rather quickly was that they still had the Black Engine Paint. Where as every Shelby GT350 made after those 252 wore Blue Engine Paint.

1'373 of the 2'380 Shelby GT350's made in 1966 were fastbacks. The fuel door on the 1966 Shelby GT350's wore a Cobra instead of the Pony and the Decklid Badge on the 1st 350 Shelby GT350's did not have the GT #50 Badge.. All others did. So it seems the first 252 were really 65 shelby gt 350's and then the next 48 were missing some decor from the rest of the 1966 Shelby GT 350's.
